MA in Responsible Management and Sustainable Economic Development
Background
The economy is central to every aspect of life on earth, and is a major factor in issues of peace and conflict. Economic development can ensure peace, bring prosperity and foster social progress, but it can also provoke or fuel conflicts. Responsible management of organizations of all kinds - private sector, governmental, international and non-profit - can contribute to the effective use of the economy, while corrupt practices produce abuses that contribute to economic problems. This broad family of issues has become central to the consideration of human progress, economic and social development, and conservation and intelligent use of our planet's natural resources.
The private sector can play a very positive role in sustainable economic development and social progress, but it can also, in certain circumstances, stimulate conflicts over control of natural resources; it can set a positive or negative example in its business practices; and it can develop questionable relationships with local governments and their negative components. Business thus plays an increasingly central role in relation to peace and conflict.
The University for Peace, which is mandated by the UN General Assembly to provide programmes of study on all aspects of peace and conflict, intends to include these subjects in its courses of study, and to make them available to students worldwide.
- To emphasize the link between the areas of management, economics and sustainable development, and the efforts to establish sustainable peace at different levels and contexts
- To prepare graduates to apply well-informed approaches to management and sustainable economic development in a broad and diverse spectrum of professional settings
- To develop and strengthen graduates' ethical leadership, conflict management and resolution, and communication skills which would be effectively used to advance peace efforts in various settings
Proposed Program
UPEACE aims to fill these needs by offering a full MA degree programme covering these subjects. This new MA programme will be intended both for future business persons, and for students who intend to work in developing regions, and need a better understanding of economic and private sector issues. This MA programme will be an alternative to a conventional MBA, or to an MA in economics.
