Laura's Lab: May 7

This week during PeaceRooms the classes worked on their fourth letter to send to their friends in Costa Rica. We began class by playing a matching game where half the class had index cards with words written on them and half the class had index cards with definitions. The students then had to work as fast as they could to find the person with the word or definition that matched theirs. Some of the words included prejudice, peace, empathy, bullying, cooperation, and forgiveness. They were quick to match up and then shared with the rest of the class their word and definition. After this we settled down to write letters answering some of the questions in our last letter from the class in Costa Rica. They wanted to know about favorite movies, what students did on the weekend, what they thought about President Obama, and what they wanted to do when they grew up. The Malcolm X students were surprised to learn that their friends in Costa Rica liked many of the same movies that they did. They students practiced their typing skills while working on their letter and also came to a greater understanding of themselves as they had to think about how to answer their pen pals' questions.
