Laura's Lab: March 19
This week we had an exciting speaker come in and work with the PeaceRooms classes on the topic of kids and journalism. Mandy Toomey, a Masters student at American University, discussed ways in which Malcolm X students might begin to tell their stories to a larger audience through the media. We discussed what kinds of things they would want to see on the news, where they typically get their news from, and how they could express themselves through photos, music, art, and film. Mandy was also able to show the students clips from several videos that featured the stories of children around the world. This was a great workshop to do with the kids as we prepare to start sending virtual letters to our penpals in Costa Rica. The group is now even more excited to share their personal stories with their international friends and to act like journalists themselves.
